2009: Looking Forward

Artists with upcoming releases worth checking out:

Bon Iver

Blood Bank EP is due out Jan. 20th.  If you've never heard of Bon Iver (aka Justin Vincent) or his last release "For Emma, Forever Ago", you are missing out.  I was sold on the first single, Skinny Love, and then entranced by the rest of the forlorn, heartfelt tracks on the album.  The legend goes that Vincent escaped to a cabin in the snow covered woods to collect himself after a bitter breakup.  His sadness is audibly present on "For Emma," and "Blood Bank" picks up right where he left off.

The Strokes

Long overdue.  The Strokes haven't formally released any new material since 2006 with "First Impressions Of Earth," although guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has released two solo albums, "Yours To Keep" and "Como Te Llama" while drummer Fab Moretti released a group titled album with his side project Little Joy.  Let's hope there is still some creativity flowing from these NYC kids.  Oh yeah, and there was also the collaboration between Santogold, Pharrell, and Julian Casablancas for a Converse commercial.  I guess the wait is understandable.  Hopefully it won't turn into another Chinese Democracy debacle...

Black Lips

New LP "200 Million Thousand" is due out Feb. 24th.  There is something comforting about their inaudible mumblings to me.  I can't put my finger just on it.  Nevertheless, I look forward to the new album.
