Tonight!!

My friends, the day has finally arrived!  Put those dancing shoes on and head to the Fabulous 40 Watt.  Doors are at 9.  I expect The Whigs to go on between 10 and 10:30.

Here is the Rolling Stone writeup from a few years back, naming them one of the top 10 ROCCCKIN artists to watch.  The band has since replaced bassist Hank Sullivant with Tim Deaux, but the sound is the same, if not better.

And here are some songs to get you pumped about:

Somewhat Topical

Roccckk!

Monday, January 12, 2009

This week is going to ROCCCKK!

I'm SOO excited about seeing The Whigs and Drive By Truckers this week at the Fabulous 40 Watt.  The Whigs are my favorite Athens band.  I remember hearing about them years back when Rolling Stone named them one of the "best up and coming acts" or something like that.  Rolling Stone was right.  Since then the band was showcased on Letterman, toured with Kings of Leon, and had the number one album, "Mission Control" on Sirius Left of Center.  I highly recommend that you check out the band's myspace and listen to their music.  Below you can also download one of my favorite songs by them called "Half The World Away."  The guitar solo on the song is filled with distortion and open chords and really showcases the raw talent of the band.  It's from their first album, "Give Em All A Big Fat Lip" which just goes to show that they have been roccckin out since the beginning.

I expect to be surprised (if that's possible) by some crazy cover songs.  Last time I saw them play the 40 Watt they covered The Rolling Stones'  "Get Off of My Cloud" and if you go to hype machine you can probably find their cover of John Lennon's "Instant Karma."

Here is The Whigs covering The Who's "The Kids Are Alright."

And let us not forget about the southern roccckk headliner, Drive By Truckers.  Lead singer Patterson Hood is something of a charitable demi-god here in Athens.  Notorious for playing countless shows for good causes, he once spoke to my music business class about making and breaking it in the music biz as well as giving back to the local community.    In fact, the show Thursday night is also a benefit for Nuci's Space, a local non-profit health and music resource center.  Doors are at 9.  Tickets are reasonably priced at $20 bucks.  You can get them dt at School Kids or call 706-353-1666.

Last, there is a Daft Punk tribute concert with DJ Immuzikation (aka Alfredo Lapuz, Jr.) this Friday at the GA Theatre.  I've also been counting down the days for this one.  I'm long overdue for a good dance party.

Jaydiohead

JUST found this new Jay-Z + Radiohead mashup online.  Pretty proud of myself, haven't even seen this on any of the music blogs I check.

We will have to wait and see how quickly it explodes on the internet.  The first song is pretty good.  Then again, I'm a pretty big Radiohead fan.

2009: Looking Forward

Artists with upcoming releases worth checking out:

Bon Iver

Blood Bank EP is due out Jan. 20th.  If you've never heard of Bon Iver (aka Justin Vincent) or his last release "For Emma, Forever Ago", you are missing out.  I was sold on the first single, Skinny Love, and then entranced by the rest of the forlorn, heartfelt tracks on the album.  The legend goes that Vincent escaped to a cabin in the snow covered woods to collect himself after a bitter breakup.  His sadness is audibly present on "For Emma," and "Blood Bank" picks up right where he left off.

The Strokes

Long overdue.  The Strokes haven't formally released any new material since 2006 with "First Impressions Of Earth," although guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has released two solo albums, "Yours To Keep" and "Como Te Llama" while drummer Fab Moretti released a group titled album with his side project Little Joy.  Let's hope there is still some creativity flowing from these NYC kids.  Oh yeah, and there was also the collaboration between Santogold, Pharrell, and Julian Casablancas for a Converse commercial.  I guess the wait is understandable.  Hopefully it won't turn into another Chinese Democracy debacle...

Black Lips

New LP "200 Million Thousand" is due out Feb. 24th.  There is something comforting about their inaudible mumblings to me.  I can't put my finger just on it.  Nevertheless, I look forward to the new album.

Sleepless In Athens

I can't sleep.  I'm worried.  I always worry.  I've got a meeting about a job offer tomorrow.  I'm 100% positive I will be offered a MGMT position, but I'm wondering if I really want it.  At first I was worried I wouldn't be offered enough money, but really, what is enough?

Everyone knows the economy is in shambles right now... but I'm wondering at what point do you settle.  At what point did I lose my motivation to open a rock venue?  I studied business in college, I was part of a music business program, I even had music related internships (one of which was with the lovely booking agent of the fabulous 40 Watt).

But hey, it's Jan. 8th and I'm finally starting on my New Year's resolution: to start a music blog about popular music from the Athens scene and to share with the world the music that moves me.

Right now it's Crystal Stilts.  Itunes lumps them into a wide array of genres: shoegaze, indie pop, and post-punk.  I'll go with shoegaze... they do make my legs feel more nimble...
